The Connection Newsletter

Issue #4

Monday, December 21, 2009

Welcome Note

Welcome to the fourth issue of The Connection, the Lexent Metro Connect quarterly newsletter. We have had an incredible year of growth; to meet the growing capacity demands of our customers, 2009 has been a year of major customized builds and low latency route expansions. Thank you for your continued trust in Lexent for your dark fiber needs.

Taking a quick look back, Lexent added extensively to our dark fiber network footprint throughout the New Jersey and New York metro areas.  Some of the highlights include the addition of a new East River crossing via a new bore to Brooklyn, a second Hudson River crossing via the Amtrak tunnel, and adding the new Yankee Stadium to our on-net building list.  In addition, we launched our New Jersey expansion initiative that focuses on extending our network to all of the major data center and collocation facilities between Manhattan and as far south as Piscataway.  We are taking the “path less travelled” and offering the shortest (not easiest) routes between the sites in our quest to provide the lowest latency fiber paths available.  In addition, we have continued work in the Wireless Service Provider sector, and have completed construction and deployment of the world’s largest Distributed Antenna System (DAS) network supporting two major cell phone carriers.  2009 was also a banner year in that we added our 100th commercial on-net building to our own dark fiber route.  This is in addition to the dozens of carrier hotels also on-net.

Today's economic climate underscores the importance of  telecommunications and its role in stimulating growth and efficiency within organizations. For example, financial institutions must remain competitive in an ever changing technology driven marketplace; a key differentiator for these firms is the need to interconnect their trading systems directly to the financial exchanges via the lowest latency connection available. Large banks to small hedge funds all want their trades at the front of the queue when it reaches the exchange. A 1-millisecond advantage in trading applications can be worth $100 million a year to a major brokerage firm, by one estimate. Lexent's focus on shortening routes between traders and the exchanges they trade over the past year is helping to serve New York's financial community through connections offering sub 100 micro-second latency from Manhattan to the major New Jersey ECNs.

Looking ahead to 2010, the Lexent team will continue its aggressive focus on addressing network connectivity needs for the enterprise business and financial communities with diverse, short path, dark fiber builds.  Lexent will also place additional emphasis on our growth in New Jersey including completing Phase 2 of the New Jersey Initiative with dark fiber builds to Carlstadt, Piscataway, Carteret, Nutley, Clifton, Jersey City and Parsippany.

For further details on our financial expansion projects, please read on. Also please read our "New 'On-Net' Buildings" section of our newsletter for our latest enterprise building additions. If you require our most recent Network Maps and complete PoP list, please email us at info@lexent.net.

Our aim is to build a network that meets both current and future needs of our customers; therefore, we appreciate your thoughts. Join us for a dark fiber discussion on our Plaxo, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter groups.

In closing, thank you for helping us make 2009 a success. We wish all of our customers and partners a safe and happy holiday season and a prosperous New year.  We are looking forward to great things to come in 2010!

Warm Regards,

Ray La Chance
President & CEO
